BEFORE + AFTER: JEFF WRIGHT

Please meet Jeff Wright, a 32 year old Database Administrator for an email marketing company here in Austin. Jeff has been on his health and fitness adventure for a little over a year. Something he started to improve his overall health and confidence and has now accomplished losing over 40lbs. This journey began because he wanted it and he started on his own, it’s only been in the last 4 months that’s he’s started working with his personal trainer, Robyn Pettinger. Jeff’s journey demonstrates how making health and fitness a lifestyle takes time and small steps to accomplish your goals. Read more below to see how he made this transition and learned that doing pushups isn’t all that bad.

AUSTIN SIMPLY FIT (ASF): How long have you been on your health and fitness journey? How did it all begin?
JEFF WRIGHT (JW): I started in January 2019, so I’ve just reached the one year mark! I started out just walking my dog, and one day I decided I would start a diet since I was really unhappy with my weight. From there, I started incorporating more intense cardio into my life to help with weight loss and I found that I really enjoyed it.

ASF: Why did you decide to join ASF?
JW: I really wanted to start incorporating some strength training into my fitness regimen to build muscle, but, I felt like I had no idea what I was doing. In the past I hadn’t had the best luck when I tried doing weights on my own, as I felt I wasn’t keeping the best form or fully understanding what exactly I was trying to target with each exercise.

ASF: What were your goals when you started?
JW: I wanted to get stronger to help me skate faster in my inline skating sessions, and I wanted to work on adding some muscle just from an aesthetic standpoint. I also wanted to learn a fair amount about what exercises I like best to incorporate into my own routines.

ASF: What changes have you noticed in your body, mind, spirit on this journey?
JW: I’ve lost a lot of body fat in some of the areas (primarily upper body) that I really wasn’t able to target with just my cardio regimen alone.

ASF: Any surprises since beginning?
JW: I hate doing push-ups way less than I ever thought I would, and definitely way less than when I started out!

ASF: Why do you like working out with your personal trainer?
JW: Robyn is a great motivator and an amazing teacher! I feel like every session she’s got a new exercise to try that I would’ve never tried on my own. She keeps everything varied and interesting which makes it really easy for me to stick to my training.

ASF: What are your goals & plans for the future?
JW: I’ve already exceeded all the goals I’ve set for myself, but I don’t plan on stopping any time soon.

ASF: What is your favorite food?
JW: Definitely a tie between biryani and vindaloo.

ASF: Any advice you’d share with someone just starting their journey?
JW: The things that helped me the most over the last year were buying a kitchen scale for measuring food portions, and setting a day of the week I always check and record my weight.
