Athlete of the Month
SPORTS PERFORMANCE HIGHLIGHT: Gabi Alfarache
Gabi Alfarache
Senior at McCallum High School
Fencing
Competes for Texas Sabre Academy and USA Fencing (national)
Here’s why Coach Sierra chose Gabi as this month’s featured student athlete:
I chose Gabi because she’s a hard and diligent worker. She is the definition of a student-athlete, she’s a scholar student and a great fencing athlete.
Gabi told us about her experience training with Sierra:
In what ways has your athletic performance or physique improved? My athletic performance has improved in regards to endurance; I no longer have to worry about whether or not I can withstand the intensity of fencing physically, and can instead focus on the strategic aspects of the sport.
What keeps you motivated to continue training with Sierra? While physical improvement is always a motivating factor, my two biggest motivators are college and overall discipline. I want to be prepared and well equipped for D1 lifting and training, as well as learning to work even on days when I don’t want to.
What have you learned about lifting and nutrition to improve health and performance? Training with Sierra has taught me that being an athlete is more than just competing in events related to my sport. She’s highlighted the importance of nutrition, recovery, hydration, mobility, and more factors outside my sport itself that have made me a better athlete.
What are your plans for the future? My plans for the future are to continue competing with USA Fencing and trying to make national teams, as well as becoming a Division 1 NCAA athlete.
