Hometown: Houston, Texas
When and why did you come to Austin?
I moved to Austin in 2009. After graduating from Texas State University in San Marcos, I didn’t want to go back to Houston! I loved my time in Austin when I visited and knew I wanted to make this my home.
What is your background? How did you get into personal training?
After graduating, there was something missing in my life. One of my managers invited me to watch an Austin Valkyries women’s rugby match. I didn’t know what was going on during the match, but I knew I needed to be a part of it. (The thing I was missing, it turns out, was contact sports.) I started playing rugby and fell in love with the sport.
Shortly after, I picked up boxing and weightlifting to work on my fitness on days we didn’t have practice. I was very consistent with my boxing training and had a knack for teaching newer students the techniques I was learning. I gained more responsibilities at the boxing gym and started teaching group classes. After training for competition and winning the Austin Texas Golden Gloves and Outstanding Female Novice in my first tournament, I realized my office job was getting in the way of my training. I became a NASM Certified Personal Trainer, Certified Physical Preparation Specialist, and I completed a 200 hour yoga teacher training from Black Swan Yoga. From there, I was all-in training individuals and groups full time. My clients have given me the reason to keep growing and seeking more knowledge on how I can serve them better as a trainer and coach.
Tell us about your current fitness goals and training.
My current fitness goals are to train for longevity. I love being in the gym and staying active. After 12 years of boxing and other contact sports, my priority is feeling my best and training pain-free.
What is the most common fitness myth you work through with your clients?
Many clients see uncharted territory as impossible. I work a lot on reframing the “I can’t” narrative and help build small wins to their ultimate goal.
What do you want your clients to take away from each training session with you?
I want them to feel heard, have a good time, and leave feeling accomplished.
What sets you apart from other fitness professionals?
My ability to tune into the individual, be an active listener, and my many years of experience set me apart from other fitness professionals.
What is your favorite thing about Austin Simply Fit?
My favorite thing about Austin Simply Fit is being able to train with and learn from my co-workers. I’m inspired to train hard each session and am always learning to be a better coach from the great people around me. I also love the continuing education and seminars offered through the gym that keep me growing.
Favorite quote and who said it?
“You have power over your mind – not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength.” Marcus Aurelius
Who is your hero and why?
My grandmothers are my heroes. They were both strong, powerful women and inspired me to speak my truth, be my best self, and be kind.
